Simple Ways We Can Help Protect Our Beaches
Share
Here at Okanui, the Aussie coast isn't just inspired in our designs, it's in our DNA.
It's where we escape the everyday. Our beaches are our sanctuaries, and an absolutely vital part of the Australian way of life. And because we love them so much, it’s on all of us to chip in and ensure they stay pristine for generations of beach lovers to come.
So, next time you're heading for a winter walk along Manly, a surf session down the coast, or just dreaming of those summer days, here are a few easy ways we can all play our part in beach conservation.
Leave Only Footprints (And Maybe a Little Less!)
This one’s a classic for a reason! The golden rule of any visit to our beautiful beaches is to take everything with you that you brought. That means food wrappers, drink bottles. It’s a simple act that keeps our sandy beaches clean and prevents harmful plastics and waste from entering our precious ocean environment.
Kick the Single-Use Habit, For Good.
So much of the litter found on our beaches comes from single-use plastics. Think coffee cups, straws, plastic bags, and water bottles. Making a few simple swaps in our daily lives can dramatically reduce the amount of plastic that even has the chance to end up polluting our coastline.
-
Reusable Water Bottle: An easy win for staying hydrated and cutting out plastic bottles.
-
Keep Cup for Your Coffee: Your local surf club barista will thank you, and so will the turtles!
-
Reusable Shopping Bags: Pop a few in your car or backpack so you’re never caught out. These sustainable beach habits start before you even hit the sand.
Give Our Coastal Mates Some Space.
Our beaches and dunes have so much wildlife, from nesting shorebirds to tiny critters in the sand, not to mention the incredible marine life just offshore, but we need to remember we're in their homeland.
-
Respect the Dunes: Those vegetated sand dunes aren't just pretty, they're vital for protecting the coastline from erosion and providing habitat. Stick to marked paths to help protect these fragile ecosystems.
-
Keep Your Distance from Wildlife: Observe animals from afar. Getting too close can cause stress to them and disrupt their natural behaviours. If you’ve got your four-legged mate with you, make sure to keep them under control and away from sensitive wildlife areas, always checking local council guidelines.
Our Beaches, Our Responsibility, Our Joy
Keeping our Aussie beaches beautiful isn't just a task; it’s a way of ensuring that these incredible places continue to be where we can all escape, recharge, and make memories. Every small, conscious choice we make contributes to a healthier coastal environment.
So, let's all continue to enjoy the sand, the surf, and the salty air, and let's do it in a way that shows our love and respect for these truly special places. Together, we can ensure our beloved beaches remain vibrant havens for everyone, and for all the sunny (and beautifully crisp winter!) days to come.
